Feed Stores

Raising urban chickens is all fine and good until you start looking for places to buy food. The Phoenix-metro area is not exactly bustling with feed stores. Most of them are about 20-30 minutes away, which is not great, but at least I can buy food somewhere. These are also good places to check for chicks in the spring, if you’re looking to buy. But call ahead to be sure they have what you’re looking for. Here are four feed stores in the Phoenix-metro area.

Pratt’s Pets and Food: 5237 W Glendale Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301

623-939-3326

Pratt’s Pets is a great little pet store with everything from reptiles to pygmy goats. They have a lot of chicken supplies including nesting boxes, feeders and waterers. They have a limited amount of organic food, only in lay pellets. Pratt’s does not have hay or straw.

Food cost in 50 pound bags:

Organic lay pellets: $26 (they only have organic food in pellets)

Non-organic lay crumbles: $19

Scratch: $15

Ray’s Feed Store: 643 W Baseline Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85041

602-243-0188

Ray’s is a little out of the way for me, so I don’t go there as much. But they have great prices on food and supplies, some of the lowest in the valley. They do not offer organic food, but the food is vegetarian and doesn’t contain bone meal. They have hay and straw.

Food cost in 50 pound bags:

Non-organic lay pellets and crumbles: $14

Non-organic scratch: $13

Gordon’s Feed and Seed: 600 W Broadway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85041

602-276-8894

Gordon’s has a variety of inexpensive organic and non-organic food, and a great selection of supplies, conveniently located in the south central area of downtown Phoenix. They do not offer organic scratch, but have hay and straw.

Food cost in 50 pound bags:

Organic lay pellets and crumbles: $22

Non-organic crumbles and pellets are about half the price

Non-organic scratch: $13

Western Ranchman: 16028 N 32nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85032

602-992-3410

This is a great little place in north Phoenix where I bought all my chicks in the spring, and I would definitely buy there again. They have a wonderful selection of supplies, organic and non-organic food, hay and straw.

Food in 50 pound bags:

Organic lay crumbles and pellets: $23

Organic scratch: $29

Non-organic food is about half the price
